Sporty for a good cause

The “HABA Spiel- und Bewegungstag” (HABA Games and Sports Day), or the HABA Family Triathlon is an event that is practically a tradition in Bad Rodach. Every year, at the invitation of the HABA Family of Companies, the family office of Coburg Landratsamt (district office), and the town of Bad Rodach, families enthusiastic about sports meet at the outdoor swimming pool to get sporty together.

On Sunday, August 12, it’s that time again: things are already buzzing early in the morning at the outdoor swimming pool, as many hard-working helpers from the HABA Family of Companies and the district office begin to get everything ready for the Family Triathlon. The routes are marked, the scores set up, the snacks prepared, and the water play equipment gathered up.

The participating families arrive in Bad Rodach in the morning, bringing their swimsuits, the best mountain bikes, running shoes, heaps of motivation, and a good mood with them. Soon there is hustle and bustle everywhere. Starting numbers are assigned, the youngest ones are already trying out the play equipment, and one or two people are checking out the competition. The rules of the triathlon are family-friendly: single starters, mixed groups, or families can compete. They have to swim 150 meters, run 1.5 kilometers, and cycle 5 kilometers along forest paths and gravel roads. In no time at all, everyone is in their starting positions: Ready, get set, go!

In glorious weather the triathletes compete in the three disciplines, and one thing is quite clear: everybody gives it their best! There is every reason for this, because today is not only about fame and honor, but also about a good deed: for each kilometer run, swum, or rode today, the HABA Family of Companies will donate one euro to the municipal “Kinderarbeit” (Children’s Work) of the Coburg district.

“It’s great that the HABA Family of Companies and all the athletes are helping today!”

After the finish line, the athletes recharge their batteries with fresh fruit, ice cream, or cake and quickly gather new strength to try out the many things on offer at the Games and Sports Day. The younger children gather in front of the foam cannon to take a bath in the white foam mountains, the kayaks are also a hit, and the bouncy castles are popular as well. The large sandbox is filled with colorful toys and a small line has soon formed in front of the bungee run and at the bull ride. Meanwhile, a team from Radio Eins provides a cheerful atmosphere with the appropriate background music.

At 3 pm things get a bit quieter at the outdoor swimming pool, as all 200 participants, their families, and fans gather in front of the starting blocks. The winners of the 14th HABA Family Triathlon are about to be announced.

Tobias Ehrlicher, Mayor of Bad Rodach, Michael Busch, Coburg District Administrator, and Heike Habermaass, partner of the HABA Family of Companies have a huge pile of certificates with them. First there is thunderous applause for all participants and the hard-working helpers behind the scenes. Then the standings are read out one after the other. Linus Will wins as a single starter; in the family category he, his father, and his sister Luna were just overtaken by the Müller family. Christoph Kirchner from HABA Marketing wins the adult single starter category, and with his team mates Heike Habermaass and Jonas Wenzel he also wins the group category.

Michael Busch thanks the HABA Family of Companies for the donation check for 2,000 euros. To mark the company’s anniversary, the amount was rounded up nicely to support children and young people from the Coburg area. “This money will help us enable children to take part in school trips, leisure activities, and excursions who would otherwise not be able to,” explains the District Administrator. “It’s great that the HABA Family of Companies and all the athletes helped today!”
